  1. Stonewall Jackson.

  2. It was Stonewall Jackson - a very famous general. But his mother named his Jonathon Thomas. Each cavalry unit had its own name - they might be the Mississipi Eighth Cavalry, or the Virginia Third Cavalry etc. There was no overall name.

  3. I suspect the answer to your "cavalry" question is actually the name given to Jackson's Division (or his troops that he led in the Shenandoah).  They were referred to as "Jackson's Foot Cavalry" after they marched 56 miles in 2 days (basically that's 2 marathons back-to-back but carrying muskets and haversacks).

And yes, Thomas Jackson was given the nickname "Stonewall" (and the 1st Virginia Brigade became known as the Stonewall Brigade for the rest of the war).  But among his troops, Jackson had nicknames like "Old Blue LIght" and "Old Jack" and even "Tom Fool" (he was not highly regarded at VMI where he taught).  Stonewall was more a nickname for the press and southern civilians.

Winfield Scott devised the "Anaconda Plan."  The plan was to strangle the south--blockade all ports, seize the Mississippi and bit by bit, strangle the life out of the South.  That's pretty much what happened.  But Scott wasn't in command very long--just the first few months of the Civil War.  In fact, his position was offered to Robert E. Lee before the war.  The plan didn't focus on going slow in order to train troops.
