Name of Japanese sweet dumplings with red bean paste?

Does anyone know the name of these Japanese dumplings that are white (or pink or green) on the outside, about 2" across and are filled with red bean paste. The consistency of the dumplings is really neat - I initially thought that I was eating raw dough, but apparently it is cooked. I am now hooked, but don't know what to call it. Thanks.

  1. The Korean name for it is Paht-Hoepbhang

but the Japanese name I dunno

  2. Alvin is correct.  They're called mochi - it's cooked glutinous rice that's been pounded into a paste, made into various shapes and filled with sweetened red bean paste.  Delicious!  You can usually find them in the refrigerated or frozen section of an oriental/asian grocery.  If you don't have one local to you, try Hmart or Koamart, online.

The Korean version is called Chapssaltteok.  There's also Chinese and Filipino versions, but they're not exactly the same - which the Korean version is.
