Question:

Name of an asian desert?

The other day, my friend and I had a desert that was made from very small black seeds. When they were cooked they released a milky white jelly, very similar to tapioca but less firm. The name on the box was a really vague, bad translation and I don't remember what it said. Anybody have any idea what that was?

  1. Sounds like those little black eggs they put in drinks we buy at the Asian cafe.

  2. Hmmm i wish Americans would be specific when they said "Asian". I am an Indian, and an Asian too. But i think you mean Chinese. *shrugs her shoulder*

  3. Sounds a lot like cooked basil seeds.  When they are cooked or moistened they become gelatinous, very similar to tapioca.  In Thailand and India they are used frequently in sweet drinks and desserts.  I don't know exactly what it is you ate, but here is a picture of a drink that uses basil seeds.  http://www.importfood.com/recipes/basil_...

  4. I think u r refering to what we called in Singapore as Biji Selaseh. It goes very well in drinks, especially rose syrup & katirah (yummy).

  5. I'm not sure of the actual name, but the nickname is "tadpole", cos it looks like the frog spawn. Mostly used in desserts.
