Name of specy of small black birds that fly in a large flock in unison?

what are they called? they usually fly in huge packs, they are real small, and when they move in the sky they all move at the exact same time.

  1. Crows and ravens are both black, but are more 'medium sized' birds.  It may be starlings that you see flying ... a starling is just a small size smaller than a robin, and is much larger than a sparrow or finch.  It also could be that you are seeing sparrows (finches don't 'flock' the same way) which only seem black against the bright sky.  Most likely the birds are starlings, though.  If you can see them when they land, the males aren't really 'black' but have a sort of teal-green shine over the black, and the females have brown brindled feathers.


  2. This depends on where you live - several birds could fit that description.  In the US, common starlings commonly fly this way; it's an invasive species from Eurasia, so you'll see them there as well.  But North American blackbirds (icterids - related to North American orioles) sometimes move around like that as well.
