Name of swimmer who kept swimming when he couldnt hold on?

i dont mean to be racist but he was a black swimmer and very courageous. everyone else was out of the pool but he was still there and everyone applauded him for his efforts. what was his name?

  1. Eric the eel from the sydney games. It was the 100m freestyle. I'm pretty sure he was from Africa. There were originally only three in his heat but there was a false start and the other two were disqualified, so he was the only one swimming. He swam the whole thing even though towards the end he looked absolutely exhausted and the crowd went wild. he became a bit of a hero. Am I thinking of the same person. TRy this

Eric Moussambani, not to take anything away from him but you see this in the olympics alot with runners they get hurt but still finish limping or something, i remeber like in the 80s a african guy was running along distance and got hurt but still finished and it was like 2 hours late or something but he just wanted to finish soo bad, and also the runner who got hurt and was stugglin and his dad came and helped him finish and he was cryin and all....they go all that way and are representing there country they dont want to let anyone down, olympic athelets are very respectable expceially since most dont even make money in there sport
