  2. Note that the amendment that allowed an empty VP post to be filled between elections was not in place at the time of Kennedy's assasination.  There was no Vice President from the time that Johnson was sworn in 1963 and the 1965 inauguration.

    The amendment by which Ford was named the the vice presidency became law in 1967.

  3. He wasn't "appointed" president.  He succeeded to the presidency when Kennedy was assassinated.  When he ran for election in the next election, his vice presidential running mate was Hubert Humphrey.
