What is the official (or at least most commonly used) name for those winding alarms they used in WW2? It's on a lot of WW2 movies too... Those box thingies that you slowly wind and it makes a huge noise to alert the people?

  1. in England it was an air raid SIREN and the still use them but on Fire Stations

In 1947 a new fire station was built near my school and they tested the Siren and we all looked up towards France Holland and for several minutes there was silence until some laughed the war had been over nearly  2 years  but the imprint was still there and even today i don't like the sound

  2. Air Raid siren

  3. Klaxon.  Or "Tocsin".

The "Klaxon" is still used as an alerting horn for aircrews to this day.
