  1. TEST MATCH RECORD.; Australia Defeats South Africa -Double Hat Trick for Matthews.

  2. JIMMY MATTHEWS

Jimmy Matthews was a small, leathery, but remarkably tough legspinner whose place in cricket history was secured when he took a hat-trick in each innings of the Old Trafford Test against South Africa during the ill-fated 1912 Trinagular Tournament. Both feats came on the same day, and were his only wickets in the game. That particularly wet year was a good one for Matthews - he took 85 wickets at 19.37. He had only made his Test debut the previous winter, doing enough in the last three Tests against England to win selection for the tour. In all, he played more games on the 1912 tour (28) than he did in his entire first-class career in Australia. He did not resume playing after the war, even though he was still comparatively young, and for many years was curator at Williamstown.

    Jimmy Matthews..

Playing for Australia against South Africa in the first match of the 1912 Triangular Tournament at Old Trafford, Manchester, England, leg spinner Matthews took a hat-trick in South Africa's first and second innings, both taken on 28 May 1912.

  6. Yes, it was Thomas James (Jimmy) Matthews from Australia, versus South Africa (May 1912, Manchester), the only bowler to do it in test matches. And Tommy Ward was the unfortunate hat-trick victim in both innings, and thus getting himself a 'King Pair'.

  12. Jimmy Mathews~

He is famed for being the only player to have ever taken two hat-tricks in the same Test match. In the opening Test of the 1912 Triangular Tournament, playing against South Africa at Old Trafford, he took a hat-trick in each innings. He took the last three wickets in South Africa's first innings, to prevent them avoiding the follow on; later the same day, 28 May 1912, he took a second hat-trick in the second innings. None of the dismissals required the assistance of any fielders: the first batsman was bowled, then two were leg before wicket, then another bowled, and finally two more caught and bowled. South African wicket-keeper Tommy Ward was his third victim in both hat-tricks, being the only known instance of a king pair on debut in Test cricket~
