polymer is anything consisting of a repeated unit.

So there are plastics as mentioned above like polypropylene, polystyrene, PET, teflon, nylon etc.. which are used in our everyday life.

There are polymers used in technology such as polysilanes which have optical properties, responsive polymers (pH, temperature, light) such as PDMAEMA, photocromics etc. These are normally well-defined and produced in ways that are expensive but specific (whereas commercial polymers are usually produced in a bulk mass way)

and of course biological polymers starring proteins, DNA etc.. They are what we are made of, they are what we need to survive and are as well used in research and technology for various applications.

In general polymers were here before us and since we found out how to use them life is getting better.
