First off, what even IS electromagnetic radiation?

Electromagnetic radiation is energy propagated in the form of a wave, brought about by the movement of electrical charges.

The electromagnetic radiation with which you are most familiar is visible light or the visible spectrum of radiation which gives you all the colours of the rainbow from red through to violet. Each different colour represents a different wave length band of electromagnetic radiation.

Other radiation whose names may also be familiar include X-rays, Gamma-rays, Radio waves, Infra-red, and Ultra-violet radiation.
