I think these events had the most impact on those around me, and made a statement about the times.

Lots of important things happened during that time period. To list just a few:

1. Vienam war ended

2. Nixon resigns as President of the U.S.

3. President Reagan was shot

4. Watergate affair

5. Arab oil embargo drove gas prices high, gas rationing occurred.

6. Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision

Others: Jonestown mass suicide in a religious cult, US Embassy seized in Iran, George Wallace shot, paralyzed form waist down, Karen Silkwood attempts to expose faur at a nuclear facility, also in that period, the movie Silkwood comes out a decade after her death in a suspicious car crash.
