Born 'Edvige Antonia Albina Maino' on December 9, 1946 in 'Luciana' (20km from Vicenze, Italy) to parents 'Stefano' and 'Paula' Maino, Sonia met Rajiv Gandhi while they both were students at Cambridge. Later they were married in 1969 with the blessings of Rajiv's mother Ind`ira who was Prime minister of India. Sonia moved to her husband's house to live with her husband and mother-in-law. Rajiv was blown up by a human bomb planted by LTTE (Sri Lankan Tamil separatists) in a public meeting at Sriperumbudur near Chennai, on May 21,1991.

Currently as Member of Parliament representing Rae Bareli and president of Congress party, she is the Chairperson of the ruling 'United progressive alliance'.

Her father Stefano Maino died in 1983. She has mother and two sisters in Orbassano, Italy where Maino family moved while she was in teens.
