Oil. Two theories. Biogenic and abiogenic. Compressed organic matter for the former and the abiotic states that hydrocarbons percolated up through the mantel; this is fringe theory. Not animals. That is oil company BS.

Natural gas. Lighter methane hydrocarbon found in conjunction with oil.

The general definition of fossil fuels are those that are made from the remains of plants and animals from millions of years ago. Coal is a solid and mostly carbon and generally comes from plants. Oil , also called petroleum,is a liquid. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons and is generally thought to have come from the decomposition of animals. Natural gas is a gas. It is mostly methane, CH4, with some slightly larger gases such as ethane and propane.
