Name this book from my younger days?

Question

When I was at college I read a book about a man who was cheating on his wife and missed his flight with them where he hopes to confess all about the affair. The plane they were on ended up crashing and his family are killed making people very sympathetic to the protagionist.

However the sympathy is short lived as a letter confessing all emerges in the wreckage of the plane and both the main character and his mistress (I think her name is mary) are hounded by the press...I forget the ending

The plot sticks in my memory (as it was over 10 years ago I read it) but I would love to read it again

Anybody help me?

It sounds something like "Random Hearts" by Warren Adler, and something like "The Pilot's Wife" by Anita Shreve, too.

Who'd have thought this plot was that common? Anyway, check those out, see if either is a possibility.
