Question:

Names of Martial Arts Moves?

by  |  earlier

I'm writing a story which has a few brief appearances of martial arts. I have researched this quite a lot, and asked my friend who is studying martial arts for help but I need some help with names of moves. If you know any attacks/blocks and their names please tell me! Not fussed by the martial art but would prefer ninjutsu if possible. Thanks. :)

This sight has many terms. If this doesn't have what you are looking for, do a search for Ninjutsu terms or ninjutsu dojo terms. Good luck.

  2. Karate

    Pi qua quan

    Karate

    Tai chi quan

    Akido

    Caiopara

  3. Ninja martial arts techniques are forms of taijutsu. The more philosophical aspects or non-physical aspects are what make up ninjutsu.

    Blocks:

    Jodan uke - upper block

    Chudan uke - middle block

    Gedan uke - lower block

    uke nagashi - flowing block

    Gyaku - reversals

Ura - inner (as in Ura Gyaku - inside reversal)

    Omote - outside.

Ura and Omote can also be used as a kind of denotation for under and over respectively, though this isn't literal.

Oni Kudaki - Crushing the Demon - a type of shoulder/arm lock

Nage are throws, Otoshi are drops. Generally, things like Ganseki Nage have a version that is straight down called Ganseki Otoshi.

Ganseki, by the way, is "a big stone"

Musha dori is another elbow/shoulder lock (capturing the warrior)

Locking up and applying pressure to two sides of the arm or forearm is "take ori" (bamboo breaker).

I'm only really covering basic one move type things, since nobody would, for instance, go into Migite Kubisuji Tonsougata for instance... It's a formal technique... You don't really explicitly go into any technique, but looking back at your fight, you might recognize something in a principle form... "Hey, that's like Kosei Kirigakure no Kata" or "Hmm... It looks like you started into something similar to Jigoku Otoshi, but he pulled his arm back, so you kneed him in the side of the head."

If you want something more specific than that, send me a message and I'll try to give you a more precise answer. I'll never understand why people are so fascinated by ninpo taijutsu. It's nothing near as exciting as you might think. Mostly breaking away, running, and hiding.
