Question:

Names you want to like but don't?

I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way. Are there certain baby names that you want to like or think you should like, since they generally fit in with your naming style, but that you really dislike for some reason? Every once in a while, I'll be reading a name list of someone whose names I generally love, and I'll see something on there that makes me want to say "Eew." Don't be offended if some of these are you're favorites -- I think they're fabulous names, but I just really dislike them. Examples:

Tallulah -- One of my favorite baby namers has this at the top of her list, but it always sounds so goofy to me.

Danica -- I know it's Slavic name meaning "morning star," but it always strikes me as a trendy cross between Danielle and Jessica.

Selena/Sabrina/Sabina -- They sound lovely, and they're similar to Serena and Susanna, which I love. To me, though, they seem like s****. high school girls who wear too much makeup. Ick!

Giselle/Gianna/Gemma -- I recommend these to people, since I know they're technically quite pretty. I like other G names (like Gwendolen) and other J-sounding names (like Jasmine), but something about the G-says-J names bugs me.

Jasper -- It's so British, so I should love it! As it stands, however, it just reminds me of a petty English crook, like the one so named in "101 Dalmatians."

Emmett -- I should love it, as it's so manly and uncommon, but it sounds like a Muppet name. Elmo + Kermit?

What names do you want to like but don't?

  1. haha i know what you mean! surprisingly..

  2. Madison. As hard as I try, I can not see anything pretty or attractive about this name.

    - It isn't even a first name, it was origianlly an English last name which became popular as a female first name.

    - It reminds me of 'medicine'

    - Most names that end in 'son' sound masculine.

    - Its very trendy, and will make you look a fool in 20 years.

Someone, please explain to me what is good about this name!

  3. I agree with all yours.

    some of mine aree...

    Courtney.

    Olivia.

    Toby.

    Leo.

i dont really remember right now, but theres tons of others.

sorry if these names are someone whose reading.

  4. HA!  Tallulah and Jasper - is that me?  It *could* be.  Not offended if it is - simply amused.  Because I know exactly what you mean about names that I feel like I should like, but just don't.

I want to love Luna, but I just can't.  Ditto Prudence.  And Charity.  I worked in fundraising for years, and while I believe in charitable giving, to me it's less of a virtue name and more of a word that we carefully avoided when talking to donors.

For boys, nothing springs to mind.  But I know them when I hear them.

I find that I have more guilty pleasures than names-I-should-love.  I have a soft spot for three-syllable, ends-in-y names - even invented ones like Bessanie and Devony that break most of my personal rules about how names should be chosen.  I wouldn't use them - but it's like eating one of those chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches - a tempting indulgence.

  5. Sophie and Sophia

I like people that are named this I just don't think it's that pretty and I can't figure out why,

Same with Isla, it looks pretty but sounds not too pretty.

  6. you think too hard

  7. I'm agreeing with the bibilical names. I hate the "iahs"

    Jeremiah

    Isaiah

    Blech.....

Oh and I dont like when people take very pretty names like Victoria and shorten them to vicky......really?

  8. so ur name is Emmy Jo?

i like Emmy but it just reminds me of like a baby or something. no offense.

and Jo, i like Jo too, but it just sounds exactly like Joe.

haha i knew what u meant, but i couldn't think of anything, so i wuz like, "OH! Emmy Jo!" lol.

  9. i am very religious and i try as hard as i can to like biblical names for boys, but i just cant

  10. You DO think too hard.

  11. Caleb and Courtney

and renee just dont seem like a kid name

  12. I know what you mean :)

Lola- I should like this one- I really should. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but something about the flow/pronounciation just really annoys me- I don't even know why.

Samantha- I really hate it, and for no good reason. I just can't stand the shortening to Sam and it's always sounded too syrupy to me.

Hope/Faith- Both of these irritate me, even though they've really got lovely meanings. But something about them sounds really smug and a little pretentious.

Lauren- I don't like it all. It's pretty and flows well, but just annoys me to no end.

Danielle/Michelle- They're both nice and perfectly respectable, even pretty; but I just don't like them. They sound really dated to me and faded, if that's possible.

Sadie- Cute, but really reminds me of a dog.

Gwendolyn/en: Everyone seems to love this name, and with good reason, as it's pretty, graceful, and ages nicely. But I really dislike Gwen as a shortening, and it always seemed awkward to me.

Veronica- Sounds too girlie for me- I love ultra feminine names, but the sound and flow of Veronica just grates on my nerves. It's a pretty name, valid and not so common, which fits my criteria to a tee, but I just dislike it.

Rebecca- This is such a pretty, classic name, with literary connections to boot. It flows well and is very nice, but I've somehow never liked it.

Francesca- I love similar Frances, but Fransesca always seemed frilly and annoying to me. It's pretty, but a no-go for me.
