Namibia v Papua New Guinea - ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier – Match Recap
Namibia Under-19s 232 (49 ov) v Papua New Guinea Under-19s 143 (40.3 ov) - Namibia Under-19s won by 89 runs
In the ongoing International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) Under-19 World Cup Qualifier, Namibia’s Under-19 squad won the game against Papua New Guinea Under-19 by 89 runs in a match played at The Hills Cricket Club Ground, Dublin.
After winning the toss, Papua New Guinea decided to field first, hoping to restrict the opposition to a meagre total, however, the side failed to make early inroads as Namibian openers Wian van Vuuren and Justin Baard clobbered the bowling arsenal of the
opposition right from the word go.
While Wian http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Vuuren smacked 22 runs off 49 deliveries, it was the blazing innings of 49 runs off 39 deliveries by his opening partner Justin Baard that really left the opposition awestruck as Christopher Kent, the skipper of Papua New Guinea seemed running
out of ideas against the belligerent opening batsmen.
Wian was caught by wicketkeeper Dogodo Bau off a delivery by medium pacer Alei Nao, while Baard was removed by Charles Jordan Alewa Amini when he gave a catch to Toua Tom. Baard’s innings included seven boundaries and two sixes.
Papua had a glimmer of hope to bounce back in the game when they managed to take the wicket of number three batsman Merwe Gerhard Erasmus, who after scoring just four runs was adjudged leg-before-wicket on a delivery bowled by Amini.
However, the joy was short lived as Namibia did not let the fall of a quick wicket affect their plans as the batsmen maintained the steady onslaught by smacking the bowlers all around the park.
Skipper Stephen Julian Baard and middle-order batsman Jason Davidson formed a good partnership as they stood defiant against the bowlers who came bolting in deliveries right at them.
After Davidson had managed to play a fine innings of 23 runs of 23 deliveries, he was removed when Lega Siaka took a blinder of a catch off a delivery by Amini. The batsman was Amini’s third victim.
Christopher Kent, then sent Gert Petrus Lotter back to the pavilion on nil when the he shattered the stumps of the batsman on a superb delivery.
Nonetheless, it was then Zhivago Groenewald alongside Baard who wreaked havoc on the opposition’s bowlers as both batsmen exhibited commendable strokes everywhere in the field.
Baard fell after playing a courageous innings of 44 runs off 60 deliveries before giving a catch to Alei Nao off a delivery bowled by off-break spinner Albert Henao Geita.
Zhivago Groenewald also played an impressive knock of 44 runs off 52 deliveries before he was caught and bowled by Toua Tom. The Namibian tail failed to bolster any runs as the side managed to post a formidable tally of 232 runs on the board.
With a huge total ahead of them, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Papua-New-Guinea-c41002 desperately needed a solid start to their innings to give any sort of trouble to the Namibian side, however, the openers failed to impress anyone as they fell early in the innings.
Opener Charles Jordan Alewa Amini could muster only four runs after facing six deliveries before losing his wicket to Andre Engelbrecht when the bowler rammed a blazing delivery right in his stumps.
Skipper Christopher http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802 was then run-out after scoring just three runs followed by the demise of Lega Siaka, who was caught by Gert Petrus Lotter off Engelbrecht, after playing a knock of 12 runs off 27 deliveries.
The Guinea batsmen clearly struggled to coup with the batting conditions as none of the batsmen in the middle-order managed to craft a match winning innings. It was only the late-order batsman Toua Tom who smacked 41 runs off 45 deliveries to become the
highest scorer from his side without losing his wicket. However, his effort came in too late to save his side from defeat as the team could only post 143 runs in response to Namibia’s total.
Z Groenewald from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Namibia-c2964 was named as the man of the match for taking three wickets in his five overs.
