Naming Bar and Grill - Post WWII glory days themed??

My brother and I will be openning a bar and grill in the next few months, we're having challenges with a name. We'd like to do a post WWII glory days theme. Our grandfather was an aircraft mechanic during the war and he brought home a wooden airplane propellar and we have pictures of him standing in the cockpit of fighter planes and bombers. We'd like to enlarge the pictures and have them on the walls along with the propellar. But we'd like to also incorporate other things from that time frame. Pictures would be from the 1940's to early 1950's. We like the historical retro look, in a modern hip way. I think the propellar was off a training plane used when the pilots are just starting out, similar to a Piper Cub. We have been kicking around the idea of Piper's Bar and Grill. Anyone have any other ideas on slogans or names???

  1. How about:

"The Stars and Bars Pub" (nickname for USAF insignia)

    "The Aviator Bar and Grill"

"Wild Blue Yonder Bar and Grill"

    "Flyboys Bar and Grill"

"The Right Stuff Bar and Grill"

    "The Flying Tiger Pub"

    "The Hangar Deck" (Navy theme)

    "Silver Wings Pub"

    "Flying Fortress Bar and Grill"

    "The Prop Hub Pub"

    "Memphis Belle's Pub and Grub"

"Pratt and Whitney's" (the engine manufacturer)

"Twelve O'clock High" (after the 1949 movie)

"393rd Bomb Squadron" (dropped "the bomb")

p.s. if you have the model and serial number from the prop hub email me and I can tell you what airplane it is from.

pps: do I get a free meal and drink now?  ;>)

  2. Happy Bottom Riding Club"

Pancho Barnes, http://www.panchobarnes.com/  was a famous aviatrix in the 20's and 30's.  During the gloom of the depression she cashed out and created a 'Dude Ranch' on 80 acres in the Muroc Dry Lake Bed.  Edwards Air Force Base came in later and her Bar became the water hole for what she called, "fastest and bravest men on earth."

This included, General Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager, A. Scott Crossfield, H. H. Arnold, Pete Everest, Bob Hoover, Jack Ridley, and all the pilots with the Right Stuff .

In a few short years, Pancho's Ranch Oro Verde had been transformed from a barren flat parcel of desert land into a verdant oasis in the desert and the site of a lifestyle as outrageous as its host.

The ranch started to be referred to as 'The Happy Bottom Riding Club' after her old friend, General Jimmy Doolittle, went on a long ride on a new horse and was asked by Pancho if he liked the animal. General Doolittle replied, "Oh yes, it gave me a happy bottom."

You would introduce a number of people to a little know but very important part of post-war aviation history.

    Good Luck!!

  3. How about "Victory" Bar and Gril and utilize the post war victory "V" design in your logo.

  4. What about 'Propeller's Bar and Grill'?

Piper would mean nothing to an everyday person. By using the word propeller - you open up a whole new bunch of ideas for decoration, menus, logo and business cards.

    Good luck!

  5. Runway 12 Bar and Grill

Of course, pick a runway # which is meaningful to you guys.

I like 12 because that was my solo runway #.

  6. The old slogan at RAF,USAAF Burtonwood here in the UK was "KEEP EM FLYING" I thought this may be a good name.Good Luck.

  7. One of the most outstanding features of WWII aircraft was the wide variety of nose art and mascot names painted on the sides of the airplanes.  If I were doing a WWII aviation themed bar, I'd try to get photos or reproductions of original aircraft noseart and pick one of the airplanes' names for the name of the bar...
