the levels of various gases in the atmosphere vary over time, partly due to the ction of green plants. during the day plants photosynthesise. photosynthesis can be represented by the following equation:

GAS B + WATER =LIGHT

--------->GLUCOSE + GAS A

CHLOROPHYLL

name gas a and gas b

gas a =

gas b =

at night photosynthesis stops but plants still carry out another chemical reaction which affects the levels of the 2 gases

what is the name of this reaction?

write a word equation for this reaction.

  1. Gas A oxygen

    Gas b is carbon dioxide

  2. Gas B= Carbon dioxide (CO2)

    Gas A= Oxygen (O2)

    The reaction is respiration.

    Oxygen + Food -----> Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water

  3. b=carbon dioxide

    a=oxygen

  4. 6CO2+^H2O--->C6H12O6+6O2, is the formula or photosynthesis, it requires light for energywhich is trapped by the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of green plants.

    Photosynthesis occurs all day and night, but only the dark reaction takes place at night, (The part of the reaction not requiring light) The plant also respires all day and night. The following is the formula for respiration. Note that the 2 formulas are opposite each other.

    C6H12O6+6O2--->6CO2+6H2O, giving off energy from the glucose
