Naming of hurricanes?

During the weekend of August 8th through the 11th there was Tropical Storm Hernan... Now we have Hurricane Gustav, which originated as Tropical Storm Gustav... If they go up 1 letter each time there is a new storm how did we go from H back to G? this has been bugging me for a week now and I'd really like to know the answer, thx

  1. When was there a Hurricane Hernan and where did it hit.  


  2. Hernan occurred over the northeastern Pacific Ocean, which has a separate name list from the Atlantic. In the Atlantic, we now have Gustav and Hanna.

  3. Because you weren't paying attention when they gave the forecast. Hernan was for the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic and Pacific do not use the same cycle of names.
