Nan Wei delivers a stunner against Zi Liang Derek Wong in 2013 Malaysia Grand Prix Gold
Men’s Singles campaigner Nan Wei of Hong Kong alarmed all the contestants of Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold by remaining invincible in pre quarter-final round on May 2, 2013.
He locked horns with a higher ranked shuttler Zi Liang Derek Wong and their encounter prolonged to 34 minutes before ending with decisive figures of 21-15 and 21-16.
Nan Wei, who was underrated earlier in this GP Gold event, served the notice of his potential in both segments of the showdown and sealed a splendid straight-set victory.
On the other hand, the Singaporean player failed to employ all of his brilliance in the game and crashed out of this tournament.
The battle heated up when Nan Wei prevailed in few consecutive rallies and established an instant lead in the first set.
He did not squander this psychological edge and doubled his total by ruling the court in few back-to-back rallies.
This intensive campaign helped him in keeping the opposing shutter grounded. He relished full benefits of this flow and piled up a mountainous figure of 11 before interval.
After the mid-game break, he lost focus for a short span of time and allowed his competitor to narrow the gap on points table. Zi Liang proceeded at steady pace but then few blunders put his expedition to halt.
The Hong Kong campaigner capitalised his opponent’s blunders and swept the table with an overwhelming score of 21-15.
Next game was also played in similar manner as both shuttlers challenged each other in all departments but then the second half of set was completely dominated by Nan Wei.
In the beginning, Zi Liang showed some class and bagged many valuable points. It was felt that the Singaporean player has revived his lost touch and he will be able to avoid a straight-set defeat.
However, things went out of his control when Nan Wei launched a brisk attack and tipped the scale in his favour.
The Men’s Singles expert of Hong Kong played flawless badminton and locked the honour with 21-16 score.
With this win, he setup his quarter-final tussle with Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia.
