Nan Wei intercepts Shu Wada en route to Men’s Singles pre quarter-finals - Macau Open Update
Hong Kong’s Nan Wei played flawless badminton and thrashed Shu Wada in the second round of Kumpoo Macau Open Badminton Grand Prix Gold on Wednesday, November 28, 2012.
This epic Men's Singles tussle prolonged to three exhausting sets before ending with decisive figures of 21-13, 23-25 and 21-4.
Nan Wei prevailed in the opening and ending segments of this showdown as he qualified for the pre quarter-final round.
On the other hand, the Japanese campaigner could live his moment of glory only in the second set of match.
The battle heated up in very first set as Nan Wei displayed commendable fighting spirit and bagged this crucial match point.
Though, he took some time to read his rival’s game and stayed at the lower end in the establishing rallies but then a few back-to-back points helped him to rise from the dust.
Initially, Shu Wada prevailed in five consecutive rallies and then strengthened his grip by putting a decent margin of 7-3.
At this stage, Nan Wei did not lose nerve and counter-balanced the situation with six valuable points in a row.
He relished full benefits of this flow and finished the first half of the set with a favourable score position of 11-9.
After the mid-game break, Nan Wei played with great conviction and did not give his competitor even a single counter-attack opportunity.
He gathered some pace and left his challenger far behind with 18-10 total. This eight point lead proved a decisive factor as he swept the table with a staggering knock of 21-13.
There was lot of drama in next game as both contenders strived hard to achieve their respective goals.
At the one stage, Nan Wei was in a strong position to transform his 1-0 lead into a straight-set victory but then Shu Wada came in his way.
The Japanese player showed strong character and bagged this vital match point with a tight yet decisive margin of 25-23.
Third set was expected to be a nerve-racking segment as both shuttlers were standing equal in match score position.
However, Nan Wei ruled the court from very stroke until the last and locked a pre quarter-final spot with an impressive result of 21-4.
