A look into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2012
On Saturday afternoon, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame announced its 14th group of inductees, the Class of 2012, at halftime of the WNBA All-Star game between the Eastern and Western Conference. However, a date for the formal
2012 induction ceremony has not been set yet. The six inductees to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2012 announced on Saturday include:
Nancy Fahey
Nancy Fahey, who has won four consecutive NCAA national championships from 1998-2001, is presently the head coach of Washington University (WU) women’s basketball team. Now in her 25th year as the head coach at WU, Fahey
has enjoyed a stellar career and is ranked third among all active NCAA coaches with a 0.849 career winning percentage.
Nikki McCray
Nikki McCray is a former WNBA player, who served the league for eight seasons. Currently, the 39-year-old is an assistant head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks Women’s Basketball team.
During her WNBA career, she played for Washington Mystics, Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Silver Stars, and Chicago Sky and ended with a total 2,528 points. Among her myriad of accomplishments, are the two gold medals
at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
Asked to talk about her most special basketball accomplishment, the three-time WNBA All-Star McCray said, “The Hall of Fame is one of the highest accomplishments for an athlete, and I am truly humbled and honoured to be inducted
into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame,” “It has always been a dream of mine, and I would like to thank the committee for selecting me.”
Pam McGee
Pam McGee, the mother of Washington Wizards’ big JaVale McGee, is also a former WNBA player and an assistant coach. During her two seasons with the league, she played for the Sacramento Monarchs and Los Angeles Sparks. The former
South Carolina star won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1983 and 1984. In addition to that, she won Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 1984.
Inge Nissen
Looking at FIU women’s basketball Associate Head Coach Inge Nissen list of accomplishments it is hard to believe she is not in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Class already. However, the long wait has finally ended now.
Nissen, who is in her 23rd season with the Florida International University (FIU) Panthers, is an iconic figure in international women’s basketball. She led the Panthers to six NCAA Tournaments and five appearances in the Women's
NIT during 2005 and 2006.
Prior to being named in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, she was inducted into the Old Dominion Hall of Fame in 1985. Nissen’s jersey, No. 42, was one of only five numbers to be retired by Old Dominion University.
Robin Roberts
Robin Roberts was a college basketball star at South-eastern Louisiana University. Currently, the 50-year-old is the co-anchor of ABC's morning show Good Morning America. She has so far got three Emmy Awards for her sports casting
work at ESPN.
Dawn Staley
Dawn Staley is a former WNBA player and a current head coach of the University of South Carolina. The 41-year-old is the only ACC women's player to deliver more than 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, 700 assists and 400 steals. The three-time
Olympian received the honour on the same day as he was voted one of the WNBA’s Top 15 players of all time.
