The Portuguese tactician reveals that the Manchester United winger has a chance of playing a part in their Euro 2012 opener.
The 25-year old who made 40 appearances for the Manchester club suffered a foot injury in Seleccao’s 3-1 loss to Turkey. Paulo Bento’s side face Germany in their first match of the 2012 European Championship. Both sides go into
the match on the back of a few below par performances and will look to bounce back.
The winger has had a somewhat mixed season for the Red devils; he was dropped by Sir Alex on many occasions due to his inconsistent form. Despite being in and out of the United starting eleven the former Sporting Lisbon man is
a permanent fixture in Paulo Bento’s side.
The gaffer revealed that Nani will face a late fitness test and then his condition will be assessed. The Portuguese tactician also stressed that he will not risk playing Nani unless he is fully fit as the winger has had similar
injuries before.
"We will then assess his physical condition, because he was out for some days and he has had similar injuries before,” he is quoted as saying in an interview.
The medical staff will assess the extent of injury and then decide. If they decide against playing him then a player of different qualities will be deployed, who is capable of adding quality to the team
"We will decide tomorrow whether to deploy him. If he does not play, we will choose a player with different characteristics, but that will not change who we are as a team," he added.
A Seleccao head coach is confident that, regardless of Nani’s injury his side has enough quality and will not compromise their attacking philosophy. Although he is aware of the quality that Germany have in their ranks but he guarantees
that his side will be set out to attack Germany.
"We hope that we will be at our best, because we will play against a team with a lot of quality,we will try to seek a good result from the first minute. We will look at Germany in the eye." he further added.
The last time these two sides faced each other was in the quarter-final of the Euro 2008, the match finished 3-2 to Germany. This time round, the Iberian side will look to avenge their loss and beat Germany to cement their top
position in the group.
