Nani oozing confidence after contentious goal against Tottenham
Manchester United winger Nani has hailed himself as one of the best players in the world following his controversial involvement in the team's 2–0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday, 30 October.
Nani hit the free kick that found Nemanja Vidic's head for United's first goal before scoring the second in the 84th minute.
As Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes prepared to take a free kick he thought had been given by referee Mark Clattenburg after Nani had clearly handled the ball in front of Gomes. Nani realised Clattenburg had
not blown his whistle and slotted the ball into the net to the fury of Harry Redknapp's team.
"As a player I think I'm close to being as complete as I can be," the Portuguese said after the game. "Now I can say I'm one of the top players in the world."
Became consistent last season
Nani joined United in 2007, but despite making 26 league appearances during his first season at the club, it wasn't until last season that the winger began performing consistently.
This season, Nani has stepped up in Antonio Valencia's absence, scoring four goals in ten league games and providing crucial service for United's strikers from either flank. The 23-year-old's confidence
is showing no signs of wearing off.
"I play for the best club in the world and my role in the team is as a decisive player, scoring goals or setting up and so the team can win. You have to believe in yourself and believe in your abilities
on the pitch. Big games are for big players."
Nani also said he is ready to contribute to United's decisive encounters this season after spending his first two seasons with the club in the shadow of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo — a winger who did
become the best in the world during his spell at United.
"I want to be one of the best. I'm not scared to play in the big games, they are the most beautiful in football — you play with very high quality. Beautiful football, that's what everyone likes. And that
helps lift my performance too."
One such game takes place on Tuesday, 2 November, when Sir Alex Ferguson's team travel to face Turkish champions Bursaspor in the Champions League.
