Nanna Vainio defeats Lucie Havlova in the first round of Women’s Singles: Slovenia International 2011
Finland’s Nanna Vainio defeated Lucie Havlova of Czech Republic in the Women’s Singles first round of the Slovenia International 2011, at Medvode, Slovenia, on May 13.
The seventh seed, Vainio, had to work hard for 42 minutes to beat her opponent in a thrilling rubber-set match. In the second round of the Championship, the Fin will fight against Kaja Stankovic of Slovenia, who hammered Aneta Wojtkowska of Poland, in the
opening round.
The opening set of the match saw both ladies playing quality badminton. In the first part of the set, Havlova tried to build a good lead but Vainio also delivered well and remained close at 7-8. The continuous exchange of long rallies drew the interest of
the crowd. At the interval, Havlova was ahead of the opponent at with a mere 1-point lead with the scores at 11-10.
After the break, Lucie increased the speed of the game which earned her a comfortable lead of 15-11. She left no room for the Fin to dominate the game and won the first set in 15 minutes by a 21-15 margin.
Vainio put up a wonderful show in the second game. She dominated a major part of the second set, especially the rallies. Havlova could not continue the momentum in the second game and remained behind the opponent at 8-11.
After the sixty-second break, the Czech matched the speed of the opponent and reduced the gap by reaching 16-17. At this crucial stage of the second set, Havlova made a couple of unforced errors that helped Vainio finish up the second set by a 21-17 margin,
in 16 minutes.
In the third and final set of the match, the Fin kept the game at high pace and remained miles ahead of her opponent, who struggled hard to return the accurate strokes of the Vainio. The seventh seed controlled the rallies by playing a positive game throughout
the set and won it by a big margin of 21-12, in just 11 minutes. The 41-minute match ended with a 15-21, 21-17 and 21-12 score on the board.
