Naperville North loses to Sandburg by 2-0 in State Championship – High School Volleyball
Naperville North boys volleyball team did not end Saturday night the way they wanted to as the Huskies fell in a clean sweep to Sandburg in the final of the State Championship. Sandburg on the other hand had many reasons for joy as they secured themselves
the Championship title by winning the decisive match with a final set score of 25-15 and 25-16.
The Huskies were exiting the court cradling their disappointment as they were unable to perform up to the mark. In neither set were the Huskies able to give Sandburg a significant challenge which resulted in both the sets coming to Sandburg quite easily.
After the match had reached its close, Nate Bornancin, the coach of Naperville North made the following comments about his team’s performance: “I can just look back on the season and smile. Especially these last two weeks. We had our ups and downs throughout
the season. Guys were injured and out and other guys had to step up to get us to where we are. The matches that we won to get here, they definitely deserve to have that state trophy and that medal. We can play with anyone. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have
it today in the championship match.”
The start of the first set of the game promised a thrilling final as both the Huskies as well as Sandburg were trying their best to stay in control. The Huskies were at a lead position of 6-5 but before they could extend their advantage, Sandburg was able
to tie the set at 7-7. After this point, things started to go downhill for the Huskies. Rather than keep the pressure on Sandburg, the Huskies made quite a few errors that shifted the momentum to Sandburg. Sandburg took full advantage of the situation and
strengthened their position by going on runs of 5-0 and 7-0 at short intervals. As a result, it was only a matter of time before Sandburg was able to bag the opening set of the game at 25-15.
Winning the first set of the game by a considerable margin got Sandburg going and they started the second set in a dominant fashion too. The Huskies were seen struggling from the onset as Sandburg rained down relentless kills on their rivals. Once Sandburg
had the lead for themselves, they did not let it go. Sandburg was able to further de-motivate the Huskies by going on a 11-4 run that eventually sealed the deal on Naperville North at 25-16.
The loss of the State Championship comes as a source of much disappointment to the Huskies as they had been going strong all through the season. The Huskies had won the semi-final earlier by a clean sweep over Vernon Hills.
