  1. Napoleon Bonaparte

    Born: August 15, 1769

Educated: A military school near Troyes in France (not in Corsica.) Took a two-year course in artillery.

Comissioned as a second lieutenant in the French Artillery at 16 then returned to Corsica during the revolution to fight as a leiutenant colonel for the Jacobin faction trying to control the island. The Jacobins lost and Napoleon fled to Paris were he defended the Assembly from protesters in the Tulieries Palace on the 3rd of October, 1795.

He was given command of the bedraggled French army in Italy and turned them into a victorious fighting force which crushed all opposition, eventually conquering the nation. He became more involved with French politics while on campagin. He then led an underfunded expedition to Egypt and conquered the territory. He then attempted to drive into the Middle East but was forced to retreat back to Egypt following an outbreak of the plague. He left the remains of his army in Egypt when funding ran out in order to return to France and assert his political authority now that he was a true war hero.

This decision led to his coup' de' etat and the development of the Napoleonic Empire. He led numerous campaigns against the Dutch, Austrians, Germans, and Polish, crushing all resistance and placing members of his inner circle into positions of authority. In total, he led active campaigns in six wars against Allied European Coalitions and trounced almost all armies. His forces were fought to a standstill in Spain, an campaign where he never took active command.

He proceeded to attempt to blockade the entirety of Europe from England, his main enemy, which proved to be an utter economic distaster for his fledgling empire. When his fleet was humbled by Nelson at Trafalgar, he was forced to give up plans of a mass invasion of England by sea.

He then turned his attetions to Russia and led an ill-fated campaign to the very gates of Moscow, only to be forced to retreat during a harsh winter. Harried by Russian military forces and subjected to starvation and disease, his army slowly fell apart. It was a disaster in every sense of the word.

With his armies fleeing Spain under a massive British counterattack and following a trouncing defeat by coalition forces at the Battle of Austerlitz, Napoleon surrendered his Empire to the Coalition and accepted their judgement. He was exiled to the isle of Elba. He returned briefly to France, fighting a tenacious campaign for a hundred days until his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo (a huge story in and of itself.) He was put into exile once again on the isle of St. Helena. He lived a sad life of exile, writing memoirs and observing the nature of the island. He died on the 5th of May, 1821 of stomach cancer, not arsenic poisoning as some believed.

Napoleon was known as a man who recognized bravery, talent, and intelligence. He was loved by his men and respected by his enemies. At many points in time, his decisions were cruel and often merciless, but he was also known for outstanding generosity and kindness. He basically wrote the book on military tactics for the next century and many of his martial ideas are stilled cross-applied today in modern military doctrine. He was far from being a second rate officer. His code of Napoleonic Law has held much bearing on the French legal system and many of his projects, such as the Arc de Triomphe can still be seen today. In fact, much of the artwork in the Louvre was stolen by Napoleon's armies from various countries. He is possibly one of the most brilliant generals and rulers of modern times.

Good man. Bad exit strategy in Russia, that's all. :)
