The wing-back praises his side for an impressive UEFA Champions League performance; still regretting the missed scoring opportunities against Chelsea.
The Italian international believes that Napoli’s impressive performance in the UEFA Champions League has a lot to do with the team’s right spirit in the competition.
While talking to Sky Sport Italia, the 30-year old said:
“[Napoli] face every Champions League game with the right spirit.”
The player insists that the team has extracted a lot of motivation from the recent victories against the European giants, and is confident that they can go beyond the first knockout round.
“We are highly motivated in the Champions League, partly because at the start of the group phase everyone assumed we were done for. Instead, we reached the last 16 and can go into the quarter-finals.”
Napoli finished second best to Bayern Munich in Group A, knocking Manchester City and Villarreal out of the competition. In another upset, they beat Chelsea 3-1 in the first-leg of the last 16 round of UEFA Champions League.
Christian Maggio is till regretting not to score against Chelsea, as the winger had a shot cleared off the line by Ashley Cole. He believes that a fourth goal would have killed the tie.
“When there is an opportunity to score, you have to take it. It’s a shame that ball didn’t go in, as we could’ve increased our advantage.”
The Partenopei winger believes that his team cannot afford to be complacent, and will have to play their spirited game in order to qualify for the next round.
“If we play the same way we did at the San Paolo, then we can have a great game in London too. They’ll try to make it difficult for us, as they remain a great side.”
Commenting on the upcoming matches in the Serie A, Maggio is confident that his team can improve their league performances, and have the ability to bridge the gap at the top of the table.
The versatile star believes that the upcoming match against Inter Milan is a perfect opportunity to draw closer to the top three positions.
