Nara; After visiting Todaiji.. What else is good to see?

I'll be there for 2 days during Obon (so I expect it'll be busy) and I'll be driving my car so I can get into the countyside easily.

So... After visiting Todaiji (big buddha and crazy deer)... What else is good to see?

  1. Horyuji is more ancient than Todaiji. So that's the first recommendation I can think of, though that doesn't guarantee it's not as boring as any other temple in Japan.

If you go to Todaiji, don't miss Gakko-Bosatsu and Nikko-Bosatsu in Sangatu-do (March Dome).

Created by immigrants from Korea more than a thousand years ago, they are often reputed to be even more beautiful than the statue of Aphrodite in Greece.

  2. Kofukuji and Horyuji are also worth visiting.
