Narain Karthikeyan penalised after Canadian GP for blocking Felipe Massa’s way – Formula 1
Hispania Racing Team’s Narain Karthikeyan has been given a post race penalty by the stewards as a result of which, he has been demoted from 14th place to 17th place at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was going in a pretty strong position as he was fighting for the podium and near the end of the race when he was about to overlap Narain Karthikeyan, the Indian driver did not give him enough way for making the overtake. As a result,
both of them collided and Massa ran off the track and hit the sidewalls.
The Ferrari driver had to pit in order to change his front wing as a result of which he lost a lot of ground and ended up in 6th place.
According to the rules of the sport, if a driver tries to overlap another driver, then the driver being overlapped must give way for the overtake in order to avoid any sort of incident since both of the drivers’ track position or results are not affected
at all.
“The stewards, having received a report from the Race Director, have considered the following matter and determined a breach of the regulations has been committed by the competitor named below and imposed the penalty referred to,” read the stewards’ statement.
Because of this decision, Karthikeyan was unable to score his best result of the season so far. Narain finished in 14th place and if he was not given this penalty, then it would have been his best result of the season as his best result before
this race was at the Monaco Grand Prix where he finished in 17th place.
The Indian driver returned to the sport with high hopes as he was hoping to score the best possible results for his team in the ongoing 2011 season. However, his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi is not having a very good season either since their car is not as
strong as they expected it to be at the beginning of the campaign.
