in a narcotic(morphine, heroin, oxycontin etc.) "overdose" what exactly happens to the body. what are the effects.

  1. The drugs you describe are pain killers, which if given in high enough doses, can cause respiratory arrest.

This is a difficult question.  Generally speaking, an overdose of any medicine causes some function in the body to overreact in a way not intended.  Often, this can be fatal.  For powerful narcotics such as the ones you mention, it can cause to beat so hard that a heart attack can occur, slow down respiration to the point where you don't breathe at all, paralyze the central nervous system such that you can't breathe of even move, etc.  In fact, an overdose of many over the counter medicines (even aspirin) can be fatal.
