According to Nari, the Nawab was a natural leader and it was surprising for many in the world of cricket to see Pataudi elevating to captaincy at the young age of 21.
Contractor revealed that he was not astonished at all when the Indian selectors handed over the baton to Nawab, as he was well aware of the capabilities of his colleague and knew that he would do a fantastic job.
Talking to the media yesterday, Nari said, “Pataudi played a couple of Test matches and then became the captain. And it was a right decision because, as I said, he is a natural leader,” he added. After he took over as the captain, he did a great job. He
used the spinners well. He did well till Wadekar took over from him.”
He further told, “I didn’t interact much with him. I played only a couple of Tests with him. But whatever I saw him from outside, he did a fantastic job as a captain. He adjusted himself very well to the situation.”
Contractor spoke these words of honour in the backdrop of Pataudi’s death, which came about on the night of September 22. The deceased cricket legend, who had 46 Tests and 310 First-Class games to his name, lived for 70 years.
Mansur’s sudden demise has spread a wave of shock in India and the world cricket fans alike as all consider this to be a huge loss for the game.
Nari, who rubbed his shoulder with the late legend, is of the view that the most distinguished feature of Nawab was his outstanding play with just one eye. Undoubtedly, he will forever be known as one of the greatest leaders in the history of Indian cricket.
