  1. More what?  Do you wish to know about FMC and the like that carried goods througout the nineteenth century or are you asking about modern canal carriers?  Without more information we cannot answer.

  2. You should be able to get some information from the Gloucester Docks Museum archivist - probably a lot of info on the web.  Or see Mike Baldwin, below

My 2x Gt. grandfather was a Barge Captain (1851 census) on the Kennet and Avon canal and River Avon - I understand from family that they were mostly employed in carrying stone from Hanham to Bath.

If you can lay your hands a copy of Charles Hadfield's book "British Canals"   ISBN 0 7153 7852 X  it has a wealth of information, e.g. page 91 "the first part of the line from Newbury to Hungerford was opened in 1798 with " a barge freighted with a wrought Portland stone staircase, a large quantity of deals, and nine chaldron of sea coal, in the whole amounting to 40 tons"  "The Kennet & Avon was a successful canal... in its prime it carried 341,878 tons of goods in a year (1838-9) against the 60,894 of the Thames & Severn for the same year"

There are many, many books (Mike Baldwin, bookseller specialising in waterways books at Cleobury Mortimer, is a mine of information) and a very helpful guy.  He may have a web site, but his shop phone number is 01299 270 110

  3. Do you mean narrow boats carrying goods or do you want a boat moved. If the latter most transport companies will oblige, after all its just a lump of metal to them. Just need to arrange on and off loading.

  4. The Pandora,a Salford docks barge is on the river Severn, carrying coal from the supply bunkers at Worcester,to customers on the Sharpness canal.A very fine sight to see a skipper running it the right way. They are few now ,working narrowboats,There are many sites devoted to commercial boats,Tugs are my favorite, although a wide beam Humber keel boat with living quarters and a nice big air cooled Lister engine would be nice.
