Nasa: Why not sheath the underbelly of the shuttle with carbon?

fiber/kevlar layer so that it would protect it from shrapnel at takeoff and then either burn off or not hinder the function of the heat tiles on re-entry?

  2. Hmm, interesting thought, and if not Carbon could build a "Burn off shield" that would not survive the re-entry, but would keep the underbelly of the shuttle from getting damaged at lift off. Not a bad idea actually.

    Email it to NASA? Posting it to Answers won't help them too much, unless they read Answers too?

  3. I agree with andres r I didn't get a response for my idea but I sent it to nasa. alternative pollution fuel reactions( based on nature slightly)
