Does the team buy the number and own it forever and has a number ever been retired? If so, what's the highest number that can be used?

  1. Well in NASCAR teams buy the numbers from NASCAR annually & reserve others as well. In NASCAR no number is retired. As for the #3 it is not being used by any team (though his former team owner Richard Childress does buy the rights for the number annually still since 2001) simply out of respect to Dale Earnhardt.

NASCAR uses car numbers #00 to #99. The #00 numbers range from #00 to #09. And of course the rest are the standard #1 to #99.

  2. I am not going to answer the NASCAR numbers because there are 2 excellent answers in already about it but as far as IRL goes I believe they are numbered according to where they start so 1 goes to the pole sitter and so on down the line I may be wrong about that but I believe that is right

  3. In NASCAR, numbers are leased.  And, you may only use single and double digit numbers (so 0-99).  Letters are not allowed.

When a part time team runs, they are usually registered with a 1 in front of the car number.  For example, according to point standings and race results, Boris Said drives the 160 (but only the 60 appears on the car).  It was required and differentiates the regular teams from the part time teams- and also helped when several teams would run the same number part time in the old days.   However, it is not always done anymore (and I do not know why).

  4. Nascar leases the numbers to the teams and only that team will be able to use it as long as they pay for it. Three digit numbers are given to a team but only two digits are shown on the car. The highest number you will see on a car is 99. There are no numbers that were retired. The 3 is owned by Richard Childress who buys it every year from Nascar therfore no other team can use it. This is stictly Nascar though, I couldn't tell you Indy Car's procedure.

  5. In NASCAR the team owner claims any number 1 - 99 as long as no one else wants it. then a driver comes along and drives the car. the owner of the team can sell it if he wants to.

  6. 99
