Nash and Chanderpaul stabilize the West Indies
Shiv Chanderpaul and Brendon Nash put together an 87-run partnership against Sri Lanka in the first session of the second day’s play at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. As a result, the West Indies sailed along nicely as they piled up 229 for 3 by
lunch.
The first session belonged to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, as they scored a patient 95 runs for the loss of just one wicket. The overnight batsmen Daren Bravo and Chanderpaul started the second day’s proceedings in a watchful manner, though they only added eight runs in
the first couple of minutes. Dilhara Fernando then broke through the opposition, to provide http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 their first wicket of the morning.
Chanderpaul held the West Indian innings together, with a resilient 46-run innings, as he showed great temperament and patience to guide the visitors to a comfortable position.
Brendon Nash played responsibly for his 55 runs. Nash scored more runs than his senior partner, but it was Nash's support, which brought the best out of his vice-captain. In his knock, the resilient left hander applied himself on the crease. His foot work
was brilliant against the spinners, and his assurance in picking up the length of the ball was phenomenal.
Dilhara Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for the home team, as he scalped the only wicket that fell today. The right-arm seamer bowled with great pace and control, and his persistence was rewarded with the early-morning wicket of a set batsman.
Fernando delivered a perfect ball to get rid of Darren Bravo. The delivery was pitched up, and held its line after landing on leg stump, Bravo completely missed the line of the ball and the ball struck him on the pads. Bravo called for a referral as the
umpire raised his index finger, but replays backed the umpires’ decision.
The spin bowlers extracted turn off the pitch, though they were unable to grab a wicket in an economical spell of spin bowling.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajantha-c42419 Mendis was turning the ball, even though he is not the great spinner of the ball. While Rangana Herath managed to keep things tight at the other end. He managed to break the momentum of the opposition by keeping the scoring rate in check.
Previously, half-centuries off the bat of younger Bravo and Devon Smith guided the tourists to a decent position on the first day of the third Test match. The West Indies batted watchfully on a rain-hit day and didn’t allow the situation to get better of
them.
Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara decided to bowl first in overcast conditions. However, Sangakkara’s seam bowlers were not able to extract the movement as he would have liked on the first day.
The ongoing partnership between Shiv Chanderpaul and Brendon Nash will decide the fate of West Indies in the third Test. On the other hand, Sri Lanka will be disappointed with the way things have gone so far, as they have only grabbed three wickets in four
sessions.
