Nashville Predators beat Detroit Red Wings 4-1
Pekka Rinne made 34 saves to lead the Nashville Predators to a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday night.
Colin Wilson and Sergei Kostitsyn both lit the lamp for Nashville, who won for just the second time in their last seven games; which both came against the Red Wings. Martin Erat and David Legwand each also scored a goal, leading the Predators to a victory.
Ruslan Salei scored the lone goal for Detroit, who have lost three of four play-offs. Jimmy Howard was benched after giving up four goals on 16 shots in just over 30 minutes. Joey MacDonald replaced him and made 14 saves during the rest of the game.
Erat got Nashville on the board for a 1-0 lead a little more than three minutes after the opening faceoff, as he fired a wrist shot from the left circle. Howard had a clear view of Erat’s shot, but failed to get his glove on it. Nashville recorded their
next three goals on rebounds; the last of which came on the man advantage.
Legwand put Nashville up by two with nearly five and a half minutes left in the first period. The goal was set up when Ryan Suter’s shot banked off Howard toward Legwand, who knocked Dan Cleary off the puck in the right circle to score his first goal on
the night.
The Red Wings got an opportunity to score a goal late in the opening stanza but were denied by Rinne, who stretched low to stop Nicklas Lidstrom’s slap shot.
“That was a huge save,” Nashville Coach Barry Trotz said. “That goal would’ve put them back in the game, then we did a good job of staying on top of them in the second period.”
The Predators struck again to extend their lead to 3-0, a little over a minute into the middle session, when Wilson chipped his own rebound past Howard at the right post. Just after the halfway mark Nashville were up by four goals on a power play, as Kostitsyn
slid in a loose puck.
The Red Wings finally managed to reduce the deficit to 4-1 with four minutes to play in the second period. Salei managed to redirect a Henrik Zetterberg pass into the net from the left post, but Rinne kept Detroit at bay in the final frame with 13 saves
to seal the win.
