Nashville Predators notch up a 3-2 shootout win against Edmonton Oilers
The final game of this weekend was hosted by the Edmonton Oilers as they were up against the Nashville Predators.
The match took place at Rexall Place with around 17,000 fans coming to witness the match. This was the 727th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series with the Predators playing their 48th game while Edmonton Oilers played the
47th game of the season respectively.
Edmonton Oilers scored twice in the final period to level the scores and take the match into overtime. No goals were scored which resulted in the match being decided in a shootout from where Nashville Predators emerged 3-2 and winners of the match.
Joel Ward, winger of the Predators was named the star selection of the match for his important goal in the final period.
Both teams made a slow start to the match as they didn’t attack and waited for chances to come their way. There was brilliance in both teams passing and defence but the frontline constantly displayed some poor finishing.
There were chances for both teams but they lost possession just at the important moment, which resulted in very few goal attempts during the course of the period. However, in the 12th minute due to some brilliant combination and shooting the Nashville
Predators took the lead. The goal was scored by Alexander Sulzer from a quick fired well placed shot.
There were a few more goal attempts at the end of the period but no goals were scored as the Predators led 1-0 going into the break with both teams making 5 goals attempts each during the course of the period.
The second period saw the Nashville Predators start off stronger as they attacked right from the word go. There were several goal scoring chances for the away side but they failed to capitalize and didn’t score.
On the other hand, Edmonton Oilers took charge of the game after a few minutes. The home team with the backing of the home crowd also attacked and created chances for themselves. Edmonton Oilers with the brilliant passing and shooting kept the Predators
on their toes.
Though there weren’t any goals scored during the course of the period, it was thoroughly entertaining watching the two teams playing. The period ended with Nashville Predators leading 1-0. During the course of the period Edmonton Oilers made 9 goal attempts
while Nashville Predators made 7 goal attempts.
The final period turned out to be a goal fiesta, which saw Edmonton Oilers scoring through Andrew Cogliano from a brilliant backhand shot in the 3rd minute.
The game looked to end with the scores level when suddenly Predators started to attack and managed to score through Joel Ward from a simple tip in shot in the 15th minute.
However, Edmonton Oilers didn’t take long to level the scores. The goal was scored by Taylor Hall from a decent strike in the 17th minute. The period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with Oilers making 6 goal attempts while Predators made 14
goal attempts.
The match went into overtime where unfortunately no goals were scored.
However, Cody Franson’s goal in a shootout after overtime won the game for Nashville Predators 3-2.
