Nashville Predators sign Steve Begin to two-way contract
The Nashville Predators are one of the most solid teams in the National Hockey League today. So far, they have started the 2010-11 season on the right foot, posting a great record of 3-0-2.
While not necessarily the toughest team in the NHL, the Predators have added some toughness and grit to their arsenal by signing forward Steve Begin.
Begin, who was an unrestricted free agent, signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Predators that was valued at $550,000. Before making his debut in a Predators jersey, he will report
to the Milwaukee Admirals, Nashville’s American Hockey League affiliate for a conditioning assignment. Once he is ready for action, he will join the big club.
Last season, Begin played for the Boston Bruins, scoring five goals and nine assists for 14 points in 77 games. Known for his leadership skills, Begin was named one of the team’s alternate
captains during his stay in Boston. During the Bruins’ playoff run, Begin scored a single goal in 13 playoff games.
The native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames 40th overall at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to that, he played for the Val-d’Or Foreurs of the Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League, posting totals of 44 goals and 73 assists for 117 points in 157 games.
Begin made his NHL debut with the Flames in the 1997-98 season, playing five games. In 2003, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, where he would spend the next five seasons. He became
a favourite among the Canadiens’ passionate fan base, and was known as a hard-working player who always showed lots of grit.
On 26 February, 2009, the Habs traded Begin to the Dallas Stars for defenceman Doug Janik. Following the 2008-09 season, Begin would eventually sign a one-year contract with the Bruins
on 1 July, 2009.
In 486 career NHL games, the 32-year-old has scored 52 goals and 48 assists for a total of 100 points.
