Nastia Liukin joins training camp for anticipated comeback and the Olympics in the long run
The champion gymnast legacy, Nastia Liukin, had chosen the 2011 World Championships held at Tokyo last month, to announce her comeback to gymnastics in the capacity of a competitor.
Liukin did not compete at the worlds last month, but was there representing the International Gymnastics Federation.
The 2008 Olympic all-round champion revealed her intentions of starting 2-a-day training once the World Championships were over.
At the time, she had also disclosed the focus of her training, which will be on uneven bars and balance beam.
It seemed she had carefully thought out the decision, as the choice of apparatus depicts exactly the area where the United States appears to be a weak contender.
According to Liukin, Gold medallist dad, Valeri Liukin, who doubles as her head coach, had already begun working on her new bar routine. She termed the routine to be “crazy” and has numerous fans anticipating the fresh comeback performance.
Liukin predicted the 2012 Covergirl Classic to be her comeback platform. The dates of the event have not been finalized by the USA Gymnastics as yet, although, last year the event was held on July 23 in Chicago, Illinois.
In conversation with Nancy Armour of AP, Liukin also dropped the Olympic bombshell, showing every intention of competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
“For me, Beijing was more of a destiny I felt like, and London would be more like a dream,” Liukin said in the same interview last month.
About a month later, we witness some proof of her strong commitment to this dream. This week she has enrolled at a training camp at the National Team training centre.
Her road to a successful comeback is fraught with activity. Liukin will be juggling her training alongside the Nastia Liukin Cup scheduled to be held in conjunction with the AT&T American Cup.
The Nastia Liukin Cup borrows more than just the senior international elite’s name. Liukin is an active part of the cup arranged in collaboration with the USA Gymnastics and loves meeting the talented qualifiers of the Cup.
The months January through March are busy with the Nastia Liukin Cup Series being conducted for the final.
The 2012 Covergirl Classic will be Liukin’s first time competing in gymnastics since she pulled out of the World Championships in 2009.
She stood fourth on the beam in the Worlds trials, and made it to the U.S. National Team as well as the World Championships selection camp.
Even so, Liukin’s strict self-assessment did not allow her to compete and she walked away from her shot at her fourth World Championships, saying that she was not up to standards.
With the London 2012 Olympic Games only 248 days away and the 2012 Covergirl Classic approaching, one can hope that Liukin has exercised the same honesty in her self-assessment and will bring more glory to the United States.
