Nat Young and Filipe Toledo win Round 1 affair at Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
America’s Nat Young and Brazil’s Filipe Toledo walked away triumphant from their respective Round 1 heats at the Oakley Pro Bali, stop no. 5 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which got underway at the main reef
of Keramas in Bali, Indonesia, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.
Young secured his place in Round 3 by holding his own against Brazil’s Willian Cardoso and Australia’s Kai Otton in the seventh heat, consequently pushing both his rivals in the relegation round, where they were to get another shot at extending their stay
in the competition field.
Toledo, on the other hand, managed to get the better of Australia’s Kieren Perrow and Josh Kerr, both seasoned elite tour campaigners, to see himself through into the third round and forcing his rivals into the relegation round.
the opening day of the competition saw high-performance three-to-five foot waves gracing the main reef of Keramas, thus presenting the surfers with a perfect opportunity to put their skills on display and get awarded for it through good scores.
Pitted against Cardoso and Otton in the seventh heat, Young was determined to put on a solid performance and clinch victory in order to advance straight into the third round without having to surf in Round 2.
As the heat got underway, he got down to business right away and collected an impressive 9.10 and 7.93-point ride to eventually finish with a heat-total of 17.03 points. The score kept him well ahead of his rivals on the scoreboard to see him through to
victory.
“That was a lot of fun,” Young said. “The waves started pumping for our heat and there were just a lot of them coming through. Some people think that Keramas can be tricky on your backhand, but when it’s bigger you can actually get a lot more vertical. Glad
the conditions went my way today and looking forward to the rest of the event.”
Cardoso finished in second place with a heat-total of 13.90 points, which comprised of a 9.00 and 4.90-point ride, whereas Otton had to settle for third place after registering a two-wave total of 13.40 points.
The eighth heat saw Toledo prevail over a couple of formidable Australian surfers, namely Perrow and Kerr.
The odds may have been against him due to his lack of experience on the elite tour in comparison to his rivals, but the Brazilian surfer proved to be a wiser beyond his years and walk away with an impressive win after registering a heat-total of 16.07 points,
which comprised of an 8.90 and 7.17-point ride.
Perrow and Kerr finished with a heat-total of 15.50 and 11.67 points respectively, which consequently led to their relegation to Round 2.
