Nat Young and Jay Quinn advance to Round 3 at Mr Price Pro Ballito
America’s Nat Young and New Zealand’s Jay Quinn secured their spot in the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after walking away with top honours from their respective (Round of
48) heats that went down at the Willard Beach in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on Thursday, July 5.
America’s Nathan Yeomans finished right behind his compatriot Young in runner-up place during the ninth heat, consequently accompanying the latter into the next round of the competition. Brazil’s Thiago Camarao finished in third place, whereas South Africa’s
Greg Emslie rounded out the bottom-position, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The tenth heat saw Australia’s Jack Freestone successfully extend his life in the event as well after securing runner-up place to join Quinn in the next round. Australia’s Dion Atkinson and Brazil’s Jesse Mendes were forced to make a premature exit from
the competition after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
The latest day of the competition saw the huge competition field comprising of local as well as international talent take each other on in four-man battles for survival, attempting to out-perform each other in one-metre waves that were on offer. Throughout
the day, the crowd got to witness a series of enthralling battles as the determined surfers put their skills and experience on display.
The ninth heat saw the Californian sensation Young put on a superb performance to maintain an upper hand over his rivals in the four-man bout. He surfed with patience, carefully searching for the right moment to make his charge. Once coming across a couple
of relatively juicy waves, the American surfer unloaded a series of technical manoeuvres to eventually finish with a heat-total of 13.27 points.
Yeomans did not look too shabby during the course of the event either and managed to get to a heat-total of 11.46 points, which served to put him in second-place finish and carry him through into the next round.
Camarao and Emslie made a premature exit from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 9.17 and 8.67 points.
The final heat of the day saw Quinn walk away with the win after putting on an impressive during the course of the four-man battle to eventually finish with a decisive heat-total of 14.67 points.
Freestone finished with a heat-total 12.50 points, which proved adequate to earn him a runner-up position and secure his place in the next round. Atkinson and Mendes joined the elimination list after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total
of 11.93 and 11.50 points respectively.
