Nat Young and Mick Fanning complete the quarter-finals line-up at Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
America’s Nat Young and Australia’s Mick Fanning emerged triumphant in their respective Round 5 heats at the Oakley Pro Bali, the fifth of ten stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which continued at Keramas
in Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Young got the better of Brazil’s Adriano de Souza in the third heat, while Fanning downed Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia in the fourth heat of Round 5 to earn themselves a place in the next stage of the competition.
The main event site was in a generous mood once again and offered excellent six-to-eight foot waves for some of the world’s most exciting surfing talent to showcase their skills and style while pursuing a place in the quarter-finals.
Young and De Souza had failed to hold their own during their Round 4 heats earlier in the day and therefore found themselves pitted against each other in a battle for survival during the third heat of the fifth round.
As the heat got underway, the American surfer got down to business right away, earning an 8.93-point ride off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 8.00 points to his account, thus getting to a heat-total of 16.93 points.
De Souza, who has established himself as one of the surfing elites over last couple of years, was well poised to take the win after scoring a 9.27 off his first business-wave, but failed to back it up with another good score. He only managed to score a 6.67
off his second business-wave, which just was not good enough under the circumstances. Finishing with a heat-total of 15.94 points, he found himself succumbing to his rival and thus getting eliminated from the competition.
The bout for the last available spot in the quarter-finals took place between Fanning, the former two-time ASP World Champion, and Patacchia.
Both the surfers were determined to better performance in their latest heat after failing to make much of an impact in their Round 4 heat.
Making use of his years of experience, the Australian surfer made some excellent wave selections and posted a 7.23 and 6.23 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 13.46 points.
Patacchia responded with a couple of scores in the six-point range off his top-twp waves. The resultant heat-total of 12.90 points forced him to surrender victory and thus the quarter-final spot to his rival.
