Nat Young claims top honours in the first round of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
America’s Nat Young advanced to Round 2 (Round of 48) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime present by Coca Cola after claiming victory in the seventh heat of Round 1 (Round of 96) that went down at the point-break of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Tuesday,
May 22.
Australia’s Perth Standlick also successfully extended his life in the event by securing runner-up place to join the Round 2 line-up. South Africa’s Dale Staples finished third, while Brazil’s Ricardo Dos Santos finished in fourth place. Both the surfers
were consequently forced to make a premature exit from the event.
With top surfers from around the world converging to Saquarema to participate in the third event on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime calendar, the fans expected the day to be full of thrilling action. The surfing conditions prevailing
at the event site presented an ideal stage for the surfers to put their exquisite skills on display, much to the delight of the huge crowd in attendance at Itauna Beach.
The seventh heat of Round 1 pitted Young against Standlick, Staples and Santos in a battle for the Round 2 spot.
As the four-man bout got underway, Young got off to a modest start but gradually built momentum to unload a series of impressive tricks on a juicy left-hander, earning a 6.50 for the effort. He soon caught his second business-wave and managed to earn a 6.67
off it, thus reaching a heat-total of 13.17 points. The score kept him in the lead until the end to seal the fate of the bout in his favour, consequently taking him through into the next round.
Standlick finished behind the young Californian surfer in runner-up place after collecting a couple of scores in the six-point range for a heat-total of 12.94 points.
Staples and Santos did not have much luck with the waves during the course of the heat. The South African only managed to collect a 4.00 and 5.83 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 9.83 points, while the Brazilian surfer finished with
a heat-total of 8.50 points, which comprised of a 4.77 and 3.73-point ride. The dismissal effort by the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
