Nat Young seals the deal with spectacular performance in ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic Final
America’s Nat Young clinched the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Vans Pier Classic after putting on a superb performance in a four-man Final that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, April 1.
The Santa Cruz-based surfer took the win by defeating his fellow countrymen Nathan Yeomans, Chris Ward, Chase Wilson in wild six-to-seven foot waves that were being offered during the battle for the event title.
As the Final got underway, Young managed to lock a lefthander in the opening minutes of the year, executing a series of turns to earn a 7.60 for the effort. After a long and determined search, he managed to catch his second business-wave in the dying minutes
of the battle to unload a floater-to-barrel combination. The last-minute effort enabled him to add a 7.47 to his account, taking him to a heat-total of 15.07 points. The score held up until the end to seal the fate of the heat and consequently the event in
his favour.
“I knew I got the 7.6 and I wasn’t sure, I thought I just needed a backup wave the whole time,” Young said. “Nate had a 9 and I’m just happy I got that one at the end because I didn’t even know he had the 9. I’m just happy to come away with the win. It was
super easy to get lost because it’s hard to stay in position. I got stuck inside for about five minutes and I’m just happy to come out on top.”
The 30-year-old Yeomans was nothing short of impressive during the Final. Despite getting off to a lacklustre start, the San Clemente-based gradually built momentum to eventually score a 9.17 off his first business-wave and immediately followed it up with
a 5.70-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.87 points. The last-minute effort served to put him in first runner-up place.
The 33-year-old Ward was unable to make the most of his experience and only managed to collect a heat-total of 10.66 points, which included a 5.73 and 4.93-point wave. As a result, he finished in third place.
The Newport Beach-based Wilson rounded out the bottom position after scoring a 4.07 and 2.93 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 7.00 points. Irrespective of his result in the Final, the 21-year-old American was ecstatic over making it this far in
the ASP 4-Star event and looked to keep the momentum going as he moved towards future competitions.
