Nat Young surge into Round 3 at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
The American sensation Nat Young advanced through into the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after emerging triumphant in the fourth heat of Round 2 (Round of 48) that went down at the point-break
of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 23.
Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro successfully extended his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up position. His fellow countrymen Tomas Hermes and Bino Lopes, on the other hand, failed to make the Round 3 cut following their third and fourth-place
finish respectively.
The second day of the latest event on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME calendar kept the thrilling action running in four-to-six foot waves that were on offer. The world’s best surfers found themselves pushed to their limits as they
competed against each other to ensure their survival in the contention for the event title, along with a share of the prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points that were on offer. There was plenty of motivation for the surfers to perform well, which consequently
kept the huge crowd gathered at Itauna Beach entertained.
The fourth heat of Round 2 saw Young take on three local surfers, namely Ribeiro, Hermes and Lopes in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Being the only foreigner in the heat, the Californian sensation found himself at a bit of a disadvantage. His rivals not only had the support of the crowd, but also possessed local knowledge of the surfing conditions on hand, a factor that could determine
the fate of the heat eventually.
However, Young did well to beat the odds and counter pressure with an impressive performance. The American young-gun got off to a solid, locking his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 6.93 on the score-board and immediately
backed it up with a 7.17-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 14.10 points. The score kept him ahead of his rivals on the score-board until the end to seal the deal in his favour.
Ribeiro collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 12.70 points, which eventually proved sufficient to put him in runner-up place.
Hermes scored a heat-total of 10.00 points, while Lopes was forced to settle for fourth place after standing at a heat-total of 9.00 points at the conclusion of the heat. The dismissal performance by the two surfers led to their elimination from the latest
ASP PRIME event.
