Nat Young treats the local crowd to an exquisite performance in Round 4 of Nike Lowers Pro
America’s young sensation Nat Young comfortably made his way into Round 5 (Round of 24) of Nike Lowers Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event, after putting on a superb performance to claim victory in the third heat of Round 4 (Round
of 48) that went down at the surf-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday afternoon, May 2.
Ireland’s Glenn Hall successfully made the Round 5 cut as well after getting a second-place finish in the third heat of Round 4.
A good crowd had showed up at the primary event site to catch some of the most promising local talent and renowned international surfers, which included a handful of ASP World Tour contenders, in a series of intense four-man battles. The clean two-to-four
foot waves gracing Lower Trestles on Wednesday afternoon promised a lot of excitement as the surfers were expected to go all out to ensure their survival in the latest ASP PRIME event, which promised coveted ASP ranking points and a huge prize purse.
The third heat of Round 4 pitted Young against Hall, South Africa’s Travis Logie and France’s Marc Lacomare in a four-man bout for survival.
Young is being pinned as one of the most promising surfers to have emerged from California in recent years. Doing justice to his reputations on day 2 of the competition, the young American surfer displayed his local knowledge of the waves and skills during
the heat. Locking his first business wave in the opening minutes of the heat, he scored a 6.77. Almost halfway through the heat, he locked his second business-wave and unloaded a series of powerful turns to post a 9.17 on the score-board. The resultant heat-total
of 15.94 points proved unbeatable, consequently sealing the deal in his favour.
Hall did not have the best of luck with the waves, but did manage to post a 5.63 and 6.63 on the score-board for a heat-total of 12.26 points. The score proved enough to put him in runner-up position, thus sending him through into the next round.
Logie barely missed out on the Round 5 spot after finishing in third place with a heat-total of 12.07 points, while Lacomare’s two-wave total of 7.53 points put him in fourth place. Rounding out the bottom-two positions, both the surfers were eliminated
from the competition.
