Chasing a total of just 96 runs, Indian Captain, J Goswami led her squad to a competitive victory against the New Zealand Women.
The India Women finally overcame their bad omen by making their only win of the NatWest Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series. In the close bout, the Blue Shirts cruised to victory over the Kiwis and secured the third place in the tournament.
The play-off was staged at the Officers Club Services Ground at Aldershot on Monday, 27 June, 2011.
New Zealand Women produced a disappointing batting display however the team recouped their image after the Indians came out to bat. With just one ball left for the final innings the Indian side finally managed to overcome the target.
The match took off after the New Zealand side won the toss and elected to bat.
SW Bates and team Captain AL Watkins came out as the openers for their side and produced a steady start of 19 runs.
However, in its first quarter, the opening partnership came to an end after A Sharma dismissed both the batters in their respective order.
With SJ McGlashan already on the pitch, AE Satterthwaite entered the arena.
The duo could add just 3 runs to the team’s score after McGlashan too left for the pavilion after scoring a single.
By now, the troubled Kiwis had already lost 3 wickets with just 22 runs on the scoreboard.
Satterthwaite and EC Perry (the next in order batter after McGlashan) were the only two players who came up with the highest partnership of a decent 39 runs.
However, the wicket falling pattern continued as the Indian bowling dominated the innings.

NJ Brown scored 7 runs, LR Doolan went out for nothing while RH Priest and KE Broadmore remained not out.  
Satterthwaite’s wicket was the last of the day. She earned the highest individual score of 35.
By the end of the 20th over, the New Zealand Women ended a disappointing innings with just 95 runs on the scoreboard. The team’s total included 4 fours and just 1 six while the Indian bowlers produced 8 extras.
The confident Indians started the second session of the day with PG Raut and N Tanwar as the opening batters.
Already downed from their first innings, the Kiwis posed a comparatively better threat to the Indian side.
The medium paced bowler KS Anderson managed to secure the first two wickets for her team. The bowler demolished the opening couple with just 11 runs on the Indians’ side.
Raut and Tanwar both scored 2 runs each after facing 7 and 11 balls respectively.
With M Raj and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hugh-Morris-c63550 Kaur as the next batters to come out, team India lost their third wicket with a minor increase in the total. After scoring 9 runs, including a four, Raj made her way back as V Krishnamurthy joined Kaur on the crease.
The two managed to help their side earn some handful runs through their productive partnership of 23 runs after Watkins secured Kaur’s wicket.
With the loss of their 5th player, India Women had gathered a total of 47 as Kiwi bowlers kept turning the game in their favor.   
However, the team Captain and the savior of the day, J Goswami had to come to her team’s rescue. Goswami and Krishnamurthy proceeded with the innings and earned a partnership of 11 runs.
Following this, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 Women kept losing wickets. As for Goswami, the Captain stood determined and proved her determination for victory.
Towards the close of the Indian innings, the team had lost 7 players with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Deshpande-c53821 left on the crease.
The Indian Skipper finally cruised her squad to a triumph on the last delivery of the Innings.
The day ended with a well played game between both the teams. The game concluded in a very much ‘tight’ close.
As for the New Zealand Women, there were moments in the second innings that might have turned the game in their favor. The former T20 Women’s Champions were left with a truly disappointing defeat.
