Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina win Duets Free Preliminary meet – FINA World Championships
Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina dominated day three of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Synchronised Swimming with their matchless efforts in Shanghai, China, on Tuesday, July 19.
The session of the championships conducted the Women’s Duets Free preliminary meet. Russian pair of Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina dominated the entire race, as they won the event with a highest score of 98.490 points.
In the meantime, Tingting Jiang and Wenwen Jiang of China wound up second with a mark of 96.770 points. Spain’s Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes rounded out the top three with 96.020 points. Canada’s Elise Marcotte and Gagnon Boudreau finished fourth with a total score of 94.100 points, while Yukiko Inui and Chisa Kobayashi of Japan grabbed fifth spot with 92.720 points.
In the corresponding race, Ukraine’s Daria Iushko and Kseniya Sydorenko earned sixth place honours with a total mark of 92.100 points. Giulia Lapi and Mariangela Perrupato of Italy wound up seventh with a total score of 90.860 points, while Sara Labrousse and Maite Mejean of France were placed eighth with 88.740 points.
On the other hand, Olivia Allison of Great Britain earned the ninth spot with a score of 88.520, whereas, Mary Killman and Lyssa Wallace of United States grabbed tenth place with 87.970 points.
Spain took home the Women’s Duets Free crown at the 2009 FINA World Championships, in Rome. In the respective meet, Russia secured the gold medal at the 2007 FINA World Championships, in Melbourne, Australia.
Earlier, the Russian team of Anastasia Davydova, Maria Gromova, Elvira Khasyanova, Svetlana Kolesnichenko, Daria Korobova, Aleksandra Patskevich, Alla Shishkina and Anzhelika Timanina snared the Women’s Technical Teams Routine crown with a scintillating score of 98.300 points.
While speaking about her team’s performance in the Technical Teams Routine finale, Timanina said, “Today's competition was top standard. We are not perfect and lots of things should be improved. Although Russia is a powerhouse of synchronized swimming, the sport is not popular in Russia. Hopefully our country and compatriots can help us to further promote the sport.”
Meanwhile, China secured the silver medal with a score of 96.800 points, whereas, Spain grabbed the bronze title with an effort of 96.000 points.
